If you’ve been researching permanent brows, there’s a good chance you’ve run into a slightly confusing collection of terms: microblading, nano brows, nano strokes, machine nano brows, powder brows, combination brows and maybe even a few others. They are not all the same thing, and figuring out which technique is right for you can feel like a lot before you’ve even booked an appointment.

Machine Nano Brows are one of the most natural-looking brow tattoo techniques available today and one of the techniques with the most ‘names’ assigned to it! You may also see this technique called nano brows, nano stroke brows, nano hairstroke brows or machine hairstroke brows. At DAELA, we use the name Machine Nano Brows because it makes an important distinction: these strokes are created with a tattoo machine, not with the manual blade used for microblading or nanoblading. Instead of using a manual blade to create hair strokes, as we do with microblading, your artist uses a precision tattoo machine and an ultra-fine needle to create individual strokes that mimic real brow hair.

That difference may sound small, but it has changed what we can do with cosmetic brow tattooing. Machine Nano Brows give an experienced artist tremendous control over the placement and design of each stroke and can work beautifully on a wider range of skin types, including many clients with mature, thinner, sensitive, combination or oily skin.

What Are Machine Nano Brows?

Machine Nano Brows are a form of cosmetic tattooing that uses a digital tattoo machine and an ultra-fine needle to create individual, hairlike strokes throughout the brow. The goal isn’t to make every brow perfectly uniform because real eyebrows aren’t uniform. Instead, the artist studies your existing hair growth and builds a pattern that works with it, filling sparse areas, improving symmetry and adding density where it is needed.

When done well, the finished brow shouldn’t scream “brow tattoo.” It should simply look like you have really good eyebrows.

What Is the Difference Between Nano Brows and Microblading?

Both Machine Nano Brows and microblading can create beautiful, natural-looking hair strokes. The difference is how those strokes are placed into the skin.

Microblading uses a handheld tool made up of very fine needles to manually create each stroke. Machine Nano Brows use an ultra-fine needle attached to a digital permanent makeup machine. Rather than cutting a fine stroke into the skin, the machine needle deposits pigment through a series of tiny, controlled movements. In skilled hands, this allows the artist to create extremely fine strokes while carefully controlling depth, placement, direction and density.

The machine gives the artist another level of control over how pigment is implanted. It also makes the technique suitable for some clients whose skin may not respond as well to traditional microblading, particularly people with thinner, mature, sensitive, combination or moderately oily skin. Oh, and this doesn’t mean microblading is outdated or that Machine Nano Brows are automatically better for everyone. We still believe the best brow technique is the one that works with your skin and gives you the best chance of beautiful healed results.

Why Are So Many Artists Moving Toward Machine Nano Brows?

Permanent makeup has changed enormously over the last decade. Microblading helped introduce millions of people to the idea that a brow tattoo could look soft and natural rather than heavy or obviously tattooed. As machines, needles and techniques have improved, artists have gained even more options.

For an experienced artist, Machine Nano Brows offer a tremendous amount of creative flexibility. We can create very fine hair strokes, gradually build density, change stroke patterns to work with natural hair growth and customize the brow based on the client’s skin and desired result.

They also give us another option for clients who may not be great candidates for microblading. This is one of the biggest reasons Machine Nano has become such an important technique in modern permanent makeup. It expands the number of people we can potentially treat with a realistic hairstroke brow.

Why Does the Machine Make Such a Difference?

A permanent makeup machine allows the artist to control the needle’s movement, speed and placement with incredible precision. Instead of drawing a stroke into the skin with a manual blade, the artist builds each stroke with a series of tiny pigment deposits.

For the client, you don’t need to understand the mechanics of a tattoo machine to appreciate why this matters. What matters is what an experienced artist can do with it.

We can adjust our technique as we move through different areas of the brow, follow natural growth patterns, build density where you need it and keep other areas airy and soft. That flexibility is a big part of what makes a beautifully executed Machine Nano Brow look so realistic.

It is also why this technique is not simply about owning the right machine. The equipment is a tool. The artistry comes from knowing how to use it.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Machine Nano Brows?

One of the reasons we love Machine Nano Brows is that they work for such a broad range of clients. You might be a good candidate if you have sparse brows, naturally light brows, uneven growth, areas that have been over-plucked, little to no brow hair, or simply want more shape and definition without having to draw your brows on every morning.

They are also worth considering if you love the look of hairstroke brows but have previously been told that your skin isn’t ideal for microblading.

Machine Nano doesn’t have one specific “look,” either. Your brows can be incredibly subtle and airy or fuller and more defined. The technique is customized around your natural hair, facial features and personal style.

Are Machine Nano Brows Better for Oily or Mature Skin?

Yes! This is where Machine Nano Brows have opened up some exciting possibilities. Traditional microblading can be challenging on very oily, porous, thin or mature skin. Machine Nano Brows can often give the artist more control and may heal more predictably for clients with skin types that aren’t ideal for microblading.

That said, skin type is only part of the decision. We also look at skin texture, pore size, natural brow hair, previous tattooing, skincare products, sun exposure, lifestyle and how your skin typically heals.

Very oily skin can still present challenges for crisp hairstrokes, regardless of technique. In some cases, an Ombre Powder Brow or Combination Brow may give you a better long-term result.

This is why we don’t believe in choosing your brow technique because it happens to be trending on social media. Choose the technique that makes sense for your skin.

What Happens at a Machine Nano Brow Appointment?

Your appointment starts with a consultation and brow design, not with the tattoo machine.

Before we begin, your artist will look at your natural brow hair, skin type, facial structure and symmetry and talk with you about how you normally wear your brows. Do you fill them in every day? Do you like them barely there and natural? Do you want more definition? Are there areas you always find yourself correcting with makeup?

All of that information helps us design your brows.

Your artist will map and draw the shape before tattooing begins so you have an opportunity to see and approve the overall design. Once you and your artist are happy with it, the tattooing begins.

Each hairstroke is individually placed. Your artist considers its direction, length and relationship to the strokes around it rather than simply filling in a predetermined brow shape. It takes patience, but that attention to detail is what creates a natural result.

What Do Machine Nano Brows Look Like While Healing?

One of the most important things we tell clients is this: the brows you see immediately after your appointment are not your finished brows. There is a phrase called ‘brow shock’ and it’s a very real experience for people immediately after tattooing. 

Fresh cosmetic tattooing appears darker and more defined. Over the first several days, your brows begin to soften as the skin heals. You may experience some light flaking, and the color can appear to change throughout the healing process. Don’t panic if they seem too dark at first, and don’t panic if they suddenly look lighter during healing. Cosmetic tattoo pigment goes through several stages as the skin recovers and the final color settles.

After the initial healing period, the brows become softer and more natural. Your follow-up appointment gives your artist an opportunity to see how your skin retained the pigment, reinforce any areas that healed lighter and make final refinements. The healed result is what we care about most.

How Long Do Machine Nano Brows Last?

Machine Nano Brows are long-lasting, but they are not meant to look exactly the same forever. Cosmetic tattoo pigment gradually fades and softens over time.

Many clients enjoy their brows for approximately two to four years before deciding they would like a color refresh, although there is no universal timeline. Your skin type, immune system, sun exposure, skincare routine, pigment color and lifestyle all affect how quickly your brows fade.

Someone with oilier skin who uses active skincare ingredients and spends a lot of time in the sun may experience fading differently from someone with drier skin and very little sun exposure.

We actually want cosmetic brow tattooing to soften over time. Faces change, brow trends change and your preferences may change too. Gradual fading gives us the ability to refresh your brows appropriately rather than continually adding pigment to an old, overly saturated tattoo.

Machine Nano Brows vs. Powder Brows

Both Machine Nano Brows and Powder Brows are created with a tattoo machine, but visually they are very different.

• Machine Nano Brows are all about individual hair strokes and the goal is to mimic natural brow hair.
• Powder Brows use tiny pixels of pigment to create soft shading. Depending on how they are designed, they can range from an extremely subtle wash of color to a more defined, makeup-inspired brow.
• Then there is the Combination Brow, which gives us the best of both worlds for the right client. We can use Machine Nano hair strokes where we want the appearance of individual hairs and add soft powder shading where we need more density or definition.

Why Your Artist Matters as Much as the Technique

Machine Nano Brows are technically demanding. Creating a stroke with a machine is one thing. Creating hundreds of strokes that work together to look like a believable eyebrow is another.

A skilled Machine Nano artist needs a strong understanding of facial anatomy, brow design, color theory, skin, healing, hair growth patterns, pigment implantation and symmetry. Just as importantly, the artist needs judgment.

Where should the brow begin? How much density does this person actually need? Which direction would real hair grow here? How will this stroke look when it heals? How much pigment can this particular skin tolerate?

Those decisions are what separate technically correct work from beautiful work.

Frequently Asked Questions About Machine Nano Brows

• Are nano brows, nano stroke brows and Machine Nano Brows the same thing?

  • Generally, yes. Nano brows, nano stroke brows, nano hairstroke brows and machine hairstroke brows are commonly used to describe the machine technique used to create fine, realistic brow hair strokes. At DAELA, we call the service Machine Nano Brows because it clearly distinguishes the technique from microblading and nanoblading, which use a manual tool rather than a tattoo machine.

• Do Machine Nano Brows hurt?

  • Most clients find the treatment very tolerable. Comfort measures are used during the appointment, although individual sensitivity varies.

• Are Machine Nano Brows permanent?

  • Machine Nano Brows are a cosmetic tattoo. Pigment is implanted into the skin and gradually fades and softens over time. Most clients eventually choose a color refresh when they want to bring back definition or color.

• Will people know I’ve had my brows tattooed?

  • That’s exactly what good Machine Nano work is designed to avoid. The individual strokes are placed to resemble natural brow hairs and blend with the hair you already have. When the technique is appropriate for your skin and performed well, the result can be remarkably natural.

• Can I still wear brow makeup?

  • Absolutely. You can still use brow makeup after your brows are completely healed. Many clients find they need much less of it, but your tattoo doesn’t prevent you from changing up your look when you want to.

• How many appointments will I need?

  • Machine Nano Brows typically involve an initial appointment followed by a perfecting appointment after the brows have healed. Some clients, particularly those requiring significant correction or those with very little natural brow hair, may need additional work.

• Can Machine Nano Brows cover old permanent makeup?

  • Ombre Powder Brows are the best technique to cover previous brow tattoos. Previous pigment that is too dark, saturated, discolored or poorly positioned can limit what your artist is able to create over it. In some cases, permanent makeup removal or lightening may be the better first step. Removing or fading some of the old pigment can give your brow artist much more freedom to create the shape, color and hairstroke pattern you actually want. • Are Machine Nano Brows Right for You?

  • If what you want is a natural-looking brow with realistic hair strokes, Machine Nano Brows are absolutely a technique worth exploring. They give experienced artists enormous creative flexibility and have made hairstroke brows an option for many people who may not have been ideal candidates for traditional microblading. But we don’t believe everyone needs Machine Nano Brows simply because they’re popular. Some clients will get a better result with microblading. Others are much better suited to Powder Brows or a Combination Brow. That’s where having multiple techniques available matters.
