Hi, I’m Chloe co-owner of DAELA Cosmetic Tattoo in Scottsdale, and I love doing men’s brows! Lately I’ve been seeing more men come in for their brows who all seem to tell me some version of the same thing: “I barely want anything done.”
When I’m working on men’s brows, less is often exactly what I want too. Most of the men who come to see me aren’t looking for perfect eyebrows or a dramatic change. They have a thin spot, a scar, some unevenness or an area where the hair just doesn’t grow like it used to. They want me to fix that part without making the rest of their brow look different.
Basically, they want better brows, but they don’t want anyone to know why they look better and I totally get it.

Men’s Brows Should Still Look Like Men’s Brows
One of the biggest mistakes you can make with a man’s brow is trying to make it too perfect.
Natural male brows tend to have a little irregularity to them. The hairs don’t all grow in exactly the same direction, the edges aren’t necessarily perfectly defined and one brow may be slightly different from the other and I don’t want to remove all of that character.
When I’m working on a male client, I’m usually looking for the few places where adding something will make the biggest difference. Maybe there’s a gap through one brow, the tails have gotten sparse or one side needs a little more balance. Sometimes I really am adding very little, which is usually just enough.
“I Don’t Want It to Look Like Makeup”
This is probably the biggest concern I hear from men who are considering permanent brows.
They don’t want a makeup look, and they definitely don’t want to walk into work the next week and have someone ask what they did to their eyebrows.
That’s completely reasonable, and it’s why the consultation matters so much.
When a man tells me he wants the most subtle result possible, I’m not trying to talk him into more. I’m listening to what he’s comfortable with and looking at where I can make small changes that will improve the brow without changing his face.
The goal might simply be to make the brows look a little fuller or more even. So sometimes we’re filling an area where hair has stopped growing and other times we’re disguising a scar that cuts through the brow.
You don’t necessarily need a whole new brow!
Why I Usually Don’t Want Men’s Brows to Be Too Symmetrical
Brows are supposed to be related, they don’t need to be identical. This is especially important when I’m working on men.
If I make the outline too clean, the shape too symmetrical or every little space perfectly filled, we can lose the natural look we were trying to preserve in the first place, so we work with the brow you already have.
If one brow is naturally a little higher, that may be perfectly fine. If you have a few hairs that grow outside the main shape, I don’t automatically want to clean all of those up either because those little imperfections are exactly what keep a brow looking believable.

What Can Permanent Brows Actually Fix for Men?
There are a lot of reasons men come to see me, and very few of them start with, “I want new eyebrows.” More often, it’s something specific like: Maybe your brows have gotten thinner with age. You might have a scar where hair no longer grows, or the front of your brows may still be full while the tails have become sparse. Some men have naturally uneven growth, and others have areas they’ve been looking at for years and finally decide they’d like to fix.
Permanent brow techniques can also be helpful for someone who wants a little more definition around the eyes but doesn’t want to use a brow pencil or other makeup every day.
The change doesn’t have to be dramatic to make a difference.
Will My Brows Look Tattooed?
This is usually the question behind all the other questions. A man hears “permanent makeup” or “cosmetic tattoo” and immediately pictures a very obvious eyebrow tattoo, which is definitely not what we’re trying to create! Modern brow techniques allow us to work much more subtly, and the technique I recommend will depend on your skin, your existing brow hair and what we’re trying to accomplish.
If you already have a lot of natural brow hair and just need a few areas filled in, I can work within that existing hair rather than creating a completely new shape around it. We make the decisions on exactly what we’re going to do at the consultation, or, if you prefer, you can send me pictures. The less we need to add, the less I’m going to add.
What If I’m Nervous About Doing Too Much?
If you sit down with me and say, “Chloe, I’m only doing this if nobody can tell,” I know exactly what you’re asking for.
We’ll talk about the area that bothers you, what you’d like to improve and how subtle you want the result to be. I’d much rather start conservatively and preserve the natural character of your brows than give you more than you wanted. For a lot of my male clients, success isn’t someone saying, “Your eyebrows look great.”
It’s someone saying, “You look good. Did you do something different?” That’s a very different goal.
Men’s Brows in Scottsdale
I think we’re seeing more men in Scottsdale become comfortable with services like cosmetic tattooing because the results don’t have to look cosmetic.
The men who come into DAELA Scottsdale aren’t necessarily guys who spend a lot of time thinking about their eyebrows. Usually there’s just something they’ve noticed that they’d like to improve, and once they realize we can make a small correction without completely changing their brows, the idea feels a lot less intimidating.
And that’s really how I think men’s brows should be approached because you don’t need to leave looking like you have amazing permanent makeup. You’ll leave looking like you have naturally good brows.
