Hi, I’m Ley from DAELA Cosmetic Tattoo in Scottsdale, and I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about Korean lash lifts. We started offering them at DAELA Scottsdale, and they’ve quickly become one of our most popular lash services.

I totally understand why. Korean lash lifts can give you an incredible amount of lift right from the root, which makes your natural lashes look longer and really opens up the eyes. But we also offer traditional lash lifts, and I want to be clear that I love both techniques. One isn’t better than the other. They’re different ways of working with your natural lashes, and which one I recommend really depends on your lashes and the look you’re hoping for.

So, if you’ve been hearing about Korean lash lifts and wondering what makes them different, here’s what you should know.

What Is a Korean Lash Lift?

The biggest difference with a Korean lash lift is how close to the root we can create the lift. Rather than putting as much emphasis on curling the length of the lash, we’re able to lift the lashes right from the base, which can make them look much longer.

A lot of people have naturally long lashes but don’t realize it because their lashes grow straight out or even slightly downward. When I lift those lashes from the root, you suddenly see all that length that was there the whole time.

That’s one of my favorite things about this technique. We aren’t adding anything to your lashes or trying to make them look like extensions. We’re just changing the way your own lashes sit so you can actually see them.

How Is a Traditional Lash Lift Different?

A traditional lash lift also lifts and reshapes your natural lashes, but we have more opportunity to create curvature throughout the lash. Depending on your natural lashes, your eye shape and the shield we choose, we can create anything from a soft sweep to a more noticeable curl.

Some people really love that look, and some lashes respond beautifully to it.

That’s why I wouldn’t tell every client who comes into DAELA Scottsdale that she needs a Korean lash lift just because it’s the newer technique. If you love the curl you get from a traditional lash lift and it works beautifully with your lashes, there may be absolutely no reason to change it.

When I’m deciding which technique to use, I’m looking at what your lashes naturally do and asking you what you want them to look like.

Korean Lash Lift vs. Traditional Lash Lift

The easiest way I can describe the difference is that Korean lash lifts tend to focus more on lift from the root, while traditional lash lifts give us more options for creating curl through the lash.

There’s definitely some crossover. A Korean lash lift doesn’t have to be perfectly straight, and a traditional lash lift can still give you beautiful root lift. We can customize both techniques, which is another reason I like having both available.

If you show me a picture of the lashes you love, that actually tells me more than simply saying you want a Korean or traditional lash lift. I can look at the shape you’re drawn to and then figure out the best way to create that look with your natural lashes.

Will a Korean Lash Lift Make My Lashes Look Longer?

This is probably one of the biggest reasons our clients love them.

A Korean lash lift doesn’t actually make your lashes longer, of course, but it can make them look much longer because we’re changing the angle of the lash.

If you have a long lash that grows straight out from your eyelid, you aren’t seeing its full length when you look in the mirror. Once we lift that same lash upward from the root, you can suddenly see so much more of it.

I’ve had clients look at their lashes afterward and honestly have no idea they had that much natural length. Their lashes were always there. They just weren’t growing in a direction that showed them off.

Are Korean Lash Lifts Healthier for My Lashes?

One of the things I really like about the Korean technique is the emphasis on keeping the natural lashes healthy and being very thoughtful about how they’re processed.

But that doesn’t mean there’s anything unhealthy about a traditional lash lift. We perform both at DAELA, and with either technique we’re paying attention to the condition of your lashes, the products we’re using and how long your particular lashes should be processed.

You don’t want to overprocess natural lashes with any type of lash lift, and that’s where having an experienced artist really matters.

I think that’s especially worth talking about here in Scottsdale because our climate is so dry. Hair can behave differently here, and lashes are hair too, so their condition is always something I’m paying attention to before I decide exactly how I want to approach the service.

Does a Korean Lash Lift Last Longer?

Not necessarily. A Korean lash lift should give you about the same longevity you’d expect from a traditional lash lift because ultimately, both techniques are working with your natural lash growth cycle.

Your lashes are constantly growing, shedding and being replaced by new lashes. The lashes we lift today will eventually shed, and the new lashes growing in haven’t been lifted, so the overall effect gradually softens as your lashes move through their normal cycle.

You don’t really choose Korean because it lasts longer. You choose it because you like the way the technique lifts and shapes your lashes, and you aren’t sacrificing the longevity you’d expect from a traditional lift to get that look.

Who Is a Korean Lash Lift Good For?

I especially love this technique on someone who has plenty of natural lash but feels like she can’t see it.

If your lashes grow straight out, point downward or tend to disappear a little behind your eyelid, getting that lift right at the root can make a huge difference. It’s also a great option if you simply prefer a cleaner, more elongated lash rather than seeing a lot of curl.

On the other hand, if you love that pretty, curved lash profile, I might look at your lashes and recommend a traditional lift.

This is exactly why we offer both. I’d rather have more than one technique available and choose the one that makes sense for the person sitting in front of me.

Should I Add a Lash Tint?

I love a lash tint with either type of lift, especially if the ends of your natural lashes are lighter.

It’s really common for someone to have dark lashes at the root that become finer and lighter toward the ends. You might have another couple of millimeters of lash that you barely notice because you can’t really see it.

The lift helps expose the length, and the tint makes those lighter ends visible. Together, they can make a pretty dramatic difference without adding anything artificial.

And here in Scottsdale, where we spend a lot of time dealing with heat, swimming, workouts and everything else that makes eye makeup less appealing, it’s really nice to wake up with lashes that already look done.

Which Lash Lift Should I Book?

You honestly don’t need to know.

If you’ve seen pictures of Korean lash lifts that you love, bring them with you. If you’ve always had traditional lash lifts and love the way your lashes look afterward, tell me that too.

I’m going to look at your natural lash length, the direction your lashes grow, their condition and your eye shape, and then we’ll talk about what you actually want your lashes to look like. From there, I can recommend the technique that makes the most sense.

Sometimes that’ll be Korean. Sometimes it’ll be traditional. There isn’t one answer that’s right for everyone.

For some people, getting that lift right from the root completely changes the way their lashes look. For someone else, the softer curve of a traditional lash lift is going to be perfect.
