What to expect after a lip blush tattoo appointment

If you’re new to the world of permanent makeup, getting your first lip blush procedure can be tremendously exciting–and intimidating. No doubt you’ve already seen all the amazing before and after pics and know just how fantastic your results will be. But to get that long-lasting natural lip color, you must first consider the lip blush side effects.

When you first find out that the key to getting years of effortlessly subtle lip color is a kind of tattoo, it’s easy to feel nervous. After all, tattoos can be painful and can take hours or even multiple sessions to complete. The good news is that a lip blush procedure is far quicker and less painful than traditional tattoos. With a bit of help from a topical numbing cream and a much smaller, specialized needle, the process itself is over fast and with minimal pain. On a scale of one to ten, we classify the pain as a two or a three. Not so much worse than the pain of slogging through your daily lip makeup routine, right?

Once you’ve gone home from your appointment, your lip blush recovery is already underway. No matter the shape or shade of your lips, there are a few stages of healing to expect over the next four to six weeks. Some of the initial side effects of this treatment are:

  • Swelling
  • Redness

If you experience these symptoms in the early days after your appointment, don’t be alarmed! It’s just your skin’s normal reaction as the healing process gets underway. After the first couple of days, your lips will become chapped as new skin forms to seal in your new lip color. Over the coming weeks, your lip appearance will continue to shift as your body continues merging the new color with your natural lip tone. By the end of four to six weeks, your lip blush side effects are in the past!

    • Clean your hands before touching your lips.
    • Wash your lips before bed with lukewarm water and unscented soap or cleanser.
    • Apply the aftercare balm provided by DAELA Cosmetic Tattoo in a thin layer after cleaning.
    • Repeat this process in the morning and evening for five days.
    • Avoid over-saturating the lips with the healing balm and do not let them become too dried out.
Things to Avoid:
    • Avoid consuming super spicy foods within the first 24 hours.
    • Do not apply any lip makeup for one week, except for the healing balm provided.
    • Avoid scratching, picking, or licking dry skin or flakiness.
    • Keep foreign body fluids away from the lips for five days.
    • Refrain from activities that cause extreme sweating for five days.
    • Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, or bodies of water for five days.
    • Stay away from UV exposure, including tanning booths, for five days.
    • Do not undergo massages, facials, or other skin treatments for five days.
    • Avoid laser light therapy, as it can affect the pigment color of the lips.
    • Do not use exfoliants, retinol acids, glycolic acids, or alpha hydroxy acids on the lips for 30 days after the appointment, as it may cause premature fading.
After Healing:
    • Lip tattoos can last between 2 to 3 years, depending on lifestyle, skin type, and aftercare.
    • Apply sunscreen with an SPF of 20 or greater on the lip area once completely healed.
    • Avoid using chemical exfoliants on the lips, as it may cause fading.

As rare as they may be, any more intense lip blush side effects than those mentioned above may cause alarm.
